The Plan
My plan was to leave on July 8th after church, and along the way stay in Colorado Springs then climb Pike's Peak, spend another night in Colorado Springs then continue on to Chula Vista. The timing just didn't work out for me to do that. I couldn't spend our wedding anniversary on the 7th with Susie and leave on the 8th and be able to have any cushion for unexpected events to get to Chula Vista before Mom's birthday on the 16th. So I changed my plan to drive directly to Chula Vista, then do the Pike's Peak climb on the way home.
I have bought a new tent as ours was borrowed and never returned a number of years ago. (Wish I knew who borrowed it, it was a really nice tent.) I plan to camp a few of the nights on the road. I will be camping mostly in the mountains as the flatlands and desert in July would not be comfortable at all.
I have been planning the route, and I think that I can get from Lincoln all the way to Mom's door without ever getting on a freeway. I will have about 6 miles of 4 lane divided highway to get to the entrance to Pike's Peak. Other than that I think it is all 2 lane roads. Some is even unpaved.
The Routes
Day 1, Sunday July 8th
The first day, I plan to leave from Lincoln after church. I will be driving mostly on NE (an abreviation for Nebraska not northeast) Hiway 6. The destination for the day is Johnson Lake where I will be spending the night with friends. The day's drive is 195 miles and I expect it to take about 6 hours.
Day 2, Monday July 9th
The destination for day 2 is Limon, CO. This is all pretty much flat open country. It is a drive of 302 miles, and is expected to take about 11 hours. I will be moteling it tonight as it will probably be quite hot in Limon.
